Artist Statement
As I reach my mid-twenties, I am aware that this is the age that most begin to come into their true identity. I distance myself from my teen years by asking more questions, trying new things, exploring the world and finding new ways to express myself. These last few years have been pivotal for that transition. I feel I've just begun to discover myself and my connection to environments I place myself in. During the Summer of 2020, in which there was a reinvigoration of Black pride similarly seen during the 1960s. I found myself wanting to create a social commentary on the events and narrations I had seen and experienced.
My body of work emphasizes Black joy and celebrates the nuances and magic of Blackness. Since its conception, the idea of Blackness has always been deemed as the "Other" and has been excluded from what is seen as normal or acceptable. With the use of historical context and present day imagery and voices, I narrate Black experiences, perspectives and stories. I celebrate the extraordinary and the mundane, for the purpose of eradicating the stereotypes narrations told for so long. My process combines archived imagery and video with the stories and experiences told from many generations. It creates a sense of nostalgia, familiarity and "oneness" amongst those of the African Diaspora.
With my art practice, I intentionally express dignity, subjectivity, agency, inclusion and most importantly beauty within Blackness. Wading through my work, my hope is that the viewer, whether part of the Diaspora or not, to see its descendants as Subject rather than Other.
